Your UAE driving licence and your car’s registration are two different things — but both must stay valid, and both use a 30-day grace period. This guide explains how the licence works, the renewal grace period and fines, and the black-points system that can suspend your licence.
A UAE driving licence is issued by the traffic authority of your emirate (in Dubai, the RTA). For residents it is normally valid for five years if you are 21 or older, or one year if you are under 21. You can renew from up to 30 days before the expiry date.
After your licence expires you have a 30-day grace period to renew without a fine (though driving on an expired licence is not technically allowed even during it). After the grace period, a fine of AED 10 per month builds up, capped at AED 500.
Getting caught driving with an expired licence is more serious than the monthly fee: around an AED 500 fine, four black points, and possible impounding for up to seven days.
Black points are a federal demerit system. They attach to the driver, not the car, and each violation adds points based on severity — from around 4 points for minor offences up to 23–24 for the most serious. Reach 24 black points within 12 months and your licence is suspended:

Black points stay on your record for 12 months from the date of the offence, then drop off. You can also reduce points by completing an approved traffic-awareness course (up to 8 points) or through official amnesty campaigns.
