Salik tolls in Dubai, explained

Everything about Dubai's road tolls in 2026 — rates, all 10 gate locations, tags, recharge, and the exact fines for passing without a tag or with a low balance.

Salik is Dubai’s automatic road-toll system. There are no toll booths — a small electronic tag on your windscreen is read by cameras (ANPR) as you pass a Salik gate, and the toll is deducted from your prepaid Salik account. Here is everything that matters in 2026: the rates, all ten gates, how to get and recharge a tag, and — importantly — exactly what the fines are if you pass without a tag or with a low balance.

Salik rates in 2026

Dubai moved to variable (dynamic) tolls in 2026. The charge depends on the time of day:

From June 2026 a 5% VAT also applies (so AED 6 becomes about AED 6.30, and AED 4 about AED 4.20). You are charged per gate, so one cross-city trip on Sheikh Zayed Road can pass several gates. Check salik.ae for the latest rates and any current daily caps.

The 10 Salik toll gates in Dubai

As of 2026 there are ten Salik gates. Two — Al Safa South and Business Bay Crossing — were added in November 2024.

How to get a Salik tag

Register for a Salik account and tag at salik.ae, on the Smart Salik app, or at most petrol stations. A tag costs around AED 50, plus AED 50 as your first balance. Stick it on the inside of your windscreen behind the rear-view mirror and register it to your plate.

How to recharge & check your balance

Top up (minimum AED 50) via the Salik website or Smart Salik app, at petrol stations, by SMS (send BAL to 5959 to check balance), or by calling 800-72545. Keep your registered mobile number up to date so you receive low-balance alerts.

Salik fines: the two situations (and the grace period for each)

There are two completely separate Salik penalties — and each has its own grace period to fix it before a fine sticks:

1 · Passing with NO registered tag
  • You get a 10 working-day grace period to register a tag after you first pass a gate untagged.
  • If you still have no tag after that: AED 100 for the first trip, AED 200 for the second, and AED 400 for each trip after that.
  • Limited to one violation per day per vehicle.
2 · Passing WITH a tag but insufficient balance
  • You have 5 working days to recharge after passing with a low balance.
  • Recharge in time and there is no fine. Miss it and the fine is AED 50.
  • Limited to one violation per day per vehicle.

In short: no tag at all gets expensive fast (AED 100 → 200 → 400); a low balance is a flat AED 50 if you don’t top up within five working days. Keeping auto-recharge on avoids both.

Salik uses peak/off-peak pricing: about AED 6 per gate during peak hours (6–10am and 4–8pm) and AED 4 off-peak. It is free from 1am to 6am and a flat AED 4 on Sundays and public holidays. A 5% VAT applies from June 2026. Check salik.ae for current rates.
