What is a mulkiya?
The mulkiya is your car’s registration card. It confirms the car is registered with the RTA, records who owns it, and must be valid for the car to legally be on the road. It exists as a physical card and as a digital mulkiya you can pull up in the RTA / Dubai Drive apps.

How the mulkiya works
When you first register a car, the RTA issues the mulkiya. It is normally valid for one year and must be renewed annually — which usually means the car passes a technical inspection, valid insurance is in place, and any fines are cleared. Renew on time and the card simply updates with a new expiry date.
Mulkiya & insurance: the one-month link
This part confuses a lot of drivers. In the UAE, motor insurance policies are issued for 13 months (365 + 30 days), not 12. That extra month is deliberate: it overlaps the RTA’s 30-day registration grace period, so your insurance stays valid for roughly one month after your mulkiya expires. Your insurance expiry date is printed on your mulkiya, so you can see both in one place.

What the 13th month really covers
- The extra month is mainly third-party liability (TPL) cover for the grace period — comprehensive perks like agency repair and GCC-travel cover usually end at the 12-month mark.
- Even if your insurance still shows valid, once your registration is past the 30-day grace period you are driving unregistered — which is illegal regardless of insurance.
